5 Signs Your Home Has Outdated Electrical Wiring

Most apartments in Prague were built between the 1960s and 1980s. Electrical systems designed for a few light bulbs and a TV now have to support refrigerators, dishwashers, air conditioning, and EV chargers. Here are 5 signs that your wiring needs attention.

1. Circuit Breakers Trip Frequently

If your circuit breaker trips regularly, this is not normal. It means the circuit is overloaded and the wiring cannot cope. A temporary fix is to avoid plugging in too many appliances at once. The permanent solution is to have an electrician recalculate and add more circuits.

2. Outlets Feel Warm to the Touch

Warm or hot outlets are a serious warning sign. The cause could be a loose connection, undersized wire, or damaged insulation. Unplug appliances immediately and call an electrician.

3. Burning Smell or Sparking

The smell of burning plastic insulation or visible sparks when plugging in appliances indicate an immediate fire hazard. Switch off the circuit breaker and call a professional.

4. Aluminium Wiring

Apartments from the communist era often have aluminium wiring. Aluminium oxidizes over time, connections loosen, and overheating risk increases. Current ČSN standards recommend replacing aluminium with copper conductors.

5. No Residual Current Device (RCD)

An RCD protects against electric shock. Older installations often lack one. Installation is mandatory for new work and strongly recommended during any renovation.

What Should You Do?

If you have identified even one of these signs in your home, we recommend having an electrical inspection performed. At ELITEK, we offer comprehensive diagnostics, modernization, and inspection according to current standards. We serve all of Prague and speak English, Czech, and Russian.
